Rabbit Snare Gorge..................................................$845,000

This spectacular house is located just minutes from Inverness on 35 mostly wooded acres, including 1000' of oceanfront on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Googling 'rabbit snare gorge' yields thousands of entries about this house and it's designers, Omar Gandhi architect and NYC-based Design Base 8. Near the house is a beautiful boathouse, a stunning design itself. A road though rugged terrain takes you to the cliffs at the ocean, with views for miles up the coast.

The single family home was designed as a summer getaway with the bedroom and bath on the ground floor and an open living area above that includes both the second floor and a third level mezzanine with dramatic views through large corner windows. The interior is simple, with wood panelling and white surfaces.

The 20 foot tall rusted-steel entryway leads into the hall providing access to the only bedroom and bathroom, as well as a space for services.

A straight flight of stairs leads to an open-plan living, kitchen and dining area. Sliding glass doors open out to a balcony with glass railings, oriented to offer views of the gorge and brook below, and the ocean beyond.

A third level mezzanine gives dramatic views of the entire property through large corner windows. A wood burning stove and cushioned window seats create a cozy space for admiring the landscape in the evenings.

The boathouse, in matching wood siding, has a drop-down front wall, and doors on both sides fold up.

A road to the ocean - not for the faint of heart! - winds down into the gorge, over a newly-constructed bridge across the brook at the bottom and up the other side, levelling out to a cleared area beside the cliff.

A recent project, not yet complete, is the building of a small studio, with decks on both sides, in this area facing the panoramic ocean views.

The gorge itself comprises two ravines with brooks that come together on the property and then run to the sea: a massive 'Y' formation. Much of the land has always been too steep to be of much use for logging or farming, so has been left to grow into a climax hardwood forest typical of western Cape Breton. Many huge beech trees cover the valley sides.
